Shami returns, Negi included for Asia Cup, World T20

Shami had returned from Australia before the ODI series had begun with a hamstring injury, and the BCCI had set, at that time, that his recovery period would be between four to six weeks. Sandeep Patil, the chairman of selectors, confirmed that the Bengal fast bowler had recovered and that there was not reserve fast bowler should Shami suffer a recurrence.

"Mohammed Shami is fit, bowling well and has recovered, that is all I can say at the moment," said Patil after the squad for both tournaments was named on Friday. "Regarding Manish Pandey, it is difficult to say whether a player is dropped or rested, its a tough call to make because Manish did exceptionally well in Australia. He is a player for the future."
Pandey, who scored a match-winning maiden ODI century in the final match in Sydney recently, is Kohli's replacement for the Sri Lanka series but the selectors stuck with Ajinkya Rahane, who also gives the team a back-up opener's option.

The squad, to be led by MS Dhoni, is otherwise the same as the one selected for the Sri Lanka series. Yuvraj Singh, Ashish Nehra and Harbhajan Singh remain, as do the rookie pair of Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya.

R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are the first-choice spinners, and the men currently serving as cover for them are Harbhajan Singh and the uncapped left-arm spinner Negi. Negi, 23, was this week named in the T20 squad for Sri Lanka and has been retained for the Asia Cup and World T20. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy he took six wickets at 33.66 (economy 8.71) and scored173 runs at 86.50 with a strike-rate of 173 for Delhi.

"This is the best combination of 15 we can think of," Patil said.

Patil expressed his faith in Dhoni's leadership despite the recent mixed run.

"We have no right to tell people when to retire, we have total faith in Dhoni's captaincy. He is the right person to lead in Asia Cup and World T20," Patil said.

From the squad that toured Australia recently, Rishi Dhawan, Gurkeerat Singh Mann and Umesh Yadav had been dropped for the Sri Lanka series and and it have not been recalled.

"Manish Pandey performed exceptionally well in Australia, his name was also discussed," Patil said.

"When selectors pick a team, we always give importance to domestic performance. It is not that we are only looking at seniors, we have looked at the performance, fitness and record of the domestic players as well. We have taken into account all the performances of not just 15-16 guys but all the domestic players and then picked these 15," he added.

"Harbhajan has been a part of this team. The selectors, the team management and the captain have faith in Harbhajan, his record and the contribution he has made to the team," Patil explained.

Patil said the team management had done its share of experimentations during the Australia tour.

"We experimented during Australia and discussed which players would be good for replacements. For the T20 format, where you won't get too much time, we discussed a few names. In the shorter format, horses for courses has worked," he said.

PSL hits the right notes in glitzy opening ceremony:

The Dubai International Stadium in Sports City was the scene of a visual spectacle on Thursday (February 4) night as Pakistan cricket's very own Twenty20 tournament took off in a blaze of glory in front of a raucous crowd that grew steadily in number, filling up nearly 60 percent of the stadium's 26,000 capacity as the events unfolded. If the build up to the tournament that had been in the pipeline for nearly three years was strangely low-key, the opening ceremony was anything but that. LED lights, limousines, international music stars, fireworks, woman harnessed to a hot-air balloon carrying the 'Shooting Star' trophy - you name it, it had it. As John Hammond from Jurassic Park would say - 'They spared no expense'. Here was Pakistan cricket, in all its splendour, making a statement - We're back!Dubai, billed the city of blinding lights, does global sporting events and launch ceremonies for breakfast. But for Pakistan cricket, this was new, this was special and truly momentous. It needed to be. A project as grandiose as PCB's idea of the PSL needed an opening worthy of its stature. It is, after all, a stamp of conviction in one's own product, a statement of intent to the investors. But interestingly, the 15,000-strong crowd inside the stadium didn't see it coming. The marketing team's advertising campaigns, have after all, been focussed towards the television audience back home in Pakistan.
No one less than Najam Sethi, the chairman of the league, had expressed concern in the week building up to the event of the possibility of a low spectator turnout for the opener. A Thursday start and the dreaded scheduling clash with the simultaneously-staged Masters Champions League could have rendered the opening ceremony dour. It would have warmed the chairman's heart to see Pakistan's ardent cricket fans make a beeline for the gates as early as two hours before the start of the ceremony.
Those well-acquitted with the teams sported franchise jersey, while the majority went with the traditional green of Pakistan cricket. They were given LED-embossed bracelets that were synchronized to glow according to the colours of the franchises, turning the stadium into a visual delight. The rendition of the Pakistan national anthem under a maze of green upped the decibel levels and was followed by reverberating chants of 'Pakistan Zindabad' chants to loud applause. This was now a celebration of Pakistan more than anything else.
When people are truly happy, their energy is genuine. As the five captains led their teams out to the centre for the official unveiling of the tournament, the din reached fever pitch. Misbah-ul-Haq and Shoaib Malik received generous applause, but the loudest cheers were reserved for Shahid Afridi. The inimitable Pathan had after all termed the PSL, Pakistan's 'izzat' (Pride). The captains themselves seemed awed by the events. Shunned for so long, to be part of a global event such as this was as much their dream as it was the PCB's to conduct something of this magnitude.
As the launch event entered its closing act - the song and dance performances with Ali Zafar and Sean Paul and the bedazzling fireworks display, Amjad Javed, Karachi native and self-proclaimed IPL fan, exclaimed - 'This was possibly better than the Indian Premier League's 2008 launch in Bangalore. Let's hope that the tournament can grow to be as good, if not better!'Sure, despite the two events separated by nearly nine years, there were eerie similarities. Two larger-than-life opening ceremonies featuring two passionate sets of fans followed by a rather one-sided opening match between a team in red and yellow against a team in purple (KKR were black then). But now is no time for comparison. That will come later. For now, the PSL has hit the right notes with its launch. It's time for the cricket to take centre stage
